What Kind Of Training Do They Have?
You should ask about the training for all the care team, not just a select few. How do they get trained? What training is required, and how often do they need to attend it? Do they have any ongoing training programs (for example, CPR classes), or do they rely on team members to take the initiative in that regard?
It’s also essential to find out what kind of training residents can expect from the community as well. What kind of programs are offered for residents who want to learn new skills or keep up with their interests? Can residents expect different activities throughout the year, or does it vary by season and holiday?
Are Residents Encouraged To Be Involved In Their Care?
You can ask if residents are encouraged to take an active role in their care. For example:
- What is their role in making decisions about their care? Can they choose which activities they want to do and with whom, or do they care team makes those decisions for them?
- How do they ensure they get the right service and assistance level? Are any resources available for them to get additional support if desired (e.g., a nurse hotline line)?
- What kind of training is provided to new residents when they first move into the community to know how things work and feel empowered as soon as possible after arrival?
What Accommodations Are Offered, And How Can They Be Changed Over Time?
How does the community accommodate people with special needs? Do they have a waiting list, or can you move in immediately? Who decides if an accommodation is reasonable and necessary, and how do you make such a request?
If you have a loved one with special needs, it’s essential to know they will be met before signing on the dotted line. You want to be sure that your loved one’s accommodations are reasonable and appropriate for their condition. For example, if your father has dementia but can still walk around without assistance or supervision, then he should not get his own studio apartment with private bathroom (unless he really wants this). However, if he requires assistance with daily activities like bathing and dressing himself because of his memory loss condition—then getting him private quarters makes sense. Before signing on the dotted line at any senior-friendly independent living community — especially those offering assisted living services — ask lots of questions regarding these topics so that both parties understand each other’s needs clearly from day one!
